Can someone please give me a sample answer for the techniques used in dulce et decorum est. Thanks
At the beginning of Dulce Et Decorum Est, Owen uses a simile to make us see the filthy and exhausted state of the soldiers. These men do not look like glorious soldiers but are “bent double like old beggars under sacks”. Owen then follows on to describe the terror of the gas attacks. He uses assonance and sibilance to make us hear the panic of the soldiers and the hissing of the gas as he says “Gas! Gas! Quick, boys! An ecstasy of fumbling”. Owen uses very powerful onomatopoeia to make us hear the man who got caught in the gas attack “guttering, choking, drowning”. Owen concludes his poem with a warning to us not to believe “The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori”. In Owens opinion it is not right and honourable to die for your country.
