    Screening Effect Kestell

I have been given a definition of the screening effect in school, but i don't fully understand it. What exactly is the screening effect in an atom. Please simplify for me. Thanks a million.

to put simple terms , if an atom has loads of electron this will hinder the effect that the positively charged protons have . I.e the outer electron doesn't feel the full effect of the positively charged nucleus as it shielded or screened by the inner energy levels
