Choosing LC subjects

i need to pick subjects for the leaving cert and ive decided that im not going to be doing a science as im not going to be doing any of the medical courses in college. i have no particular interest in the business subjects and havnt done business for the JC but i feel that i will need it in the future. What im asking is if i havnt done business for the JC and have no particular interest in it but really feel that i should start it for if i pick a course to do with business or just a career in the future (because most careers involve business) should i do a business subject and which one should i do? im between economics and business.

its difficult to do business if you havent done it for junior cert because most of it is the same but with more information id say economics and there is a 20% project for that subject

Hi Emma, As an LC Business teacher whetheryou covered BUsiness in JC won't have a major bearing. It helps, but the courses are different. The subject itself is quote long compred to Economics. My advce is, if you like Math choose Economics. If you want a general learning Business is great and may help a little more when progressing to university.

Strongly suggest you do one science, a language, and then whatever other subjects you like as it keeps the most doors open. you said above that you are interested in doing business, while a lot of it carries over from JC, I know a lot of people who started it in 5th and are getting on okay with it. Their grades at the start were lower than those who had done as a JC subject but in general, with lots of study they caught up fast enough.

There is definitely a good bit of catching up on background knowlege to do if you haven't done it for JC but it is nothing unmaneagable. You don't have to have a huge interest in business but it does help if you actually want to sit down and study the subject. Definitely look at the syllabus of the course online and see if you find things that interest you in the course.

Most business courses in college do not require a Business leaving cert so it might not be necessary. More courses require a science subject than a business subject! Business in itself is not a difficult subject it is realistically just a lot of learning off!

The economics course is drastically shorter than the business one, but it does have a project that can be tricky. It is a more enjoyable but certainly a more challenging subject than business. Some of the concepts take a while to grasp. There's nothing difficult about the content in business, there's just so much to learn. There is a lot of overlap between JC business but it wouldn't leave you at that much of a disadvantage because you go over everything again from the start anyways. If you find graphs and calculations ok then I'd choose economics but if you need an easier subject for points then business is the best option.
