is french necessary for leaving cert? Subject choices!
GodlyShadow The Leaving Cert10

so I want to do something like accounting or medicine or science courses (very broad, I know) and I'm in ty and I was wondering whether or not I have to do french for leaving cert. I want to get high points and got a B in french for my JC. I kind of hate the subject ngl but would I have to do it? my subject choice plan right now is applied maths, chemistry, physics, and accounting.

Yup. As far as I know, A subject except from Irish and English is compulsory especially if you want to do medicine. You can do Spanish or German if you want but I wouldnt recommend it, it will be way hard for u since u didnt do it for the JC

Also, The LC is marked according to ur 6 BEST subjects, if u dont do too good in French, it wont be counted

wait so say if i got 600 points and then got a H6 in French and I need french for that course, would i still have 600 points or would they use what I got in french and 5 other subjects?

You need to pass french that's it. if your other 6 subjects are the top, they will be counted excluding french. You would have 600 points, yes. Only your top 6 subjects will be counted

If I were in your shoes I wouldn't drop French. Better keep your options open for now.

#1: You can do 1 LC subject, or you can do 10 LC subjects, you will still just get a statement of your LC results in August, no matter how many you do. You cannat 'pass' or 'fail' the LC. #2: Different courses in different colleges will have different subject requirements. Some may need French, some may not. Some may need a H5 in Higher level Maths, some may not. MOST (but not all!) university courses will require a 'modern language' meaning French, Spanish, German or French. Check on www.qualifax.ie for details of what LC Subjects are needed for what courses. #3: If you have the correct subjects for a course then CAO points come into play. They are calculated from your BEST 6 SUBJECTS (which may or may not be the subjects required for the course! See #2 above!) Everybody who has applied for a particular course, with the correct subjects, are then ranked by computer according to thir CAO points, and the best are offered a place until the course is full. CAO points do NOT reflect how hard or easy a course may be, just how popular it is. A popular course with few places will have high points. An unpopular course with many places will have low points.

^^^actually you have to do at least 6 subjects and you can fail the LC it's very easily possible.
