Distinction Sample Answer
Question
(a) What is the theme of this novel?
(b) Briefly describe one event that gives you insight into the theme you mentioned.
(c) Did this theme make you happy or sad? Give one reason for your answer.
(d) You are a character in the novel you have named. Write a diary entry in your own personal diary about it. In the entry mention:
- one point of information about your part in the novel;
- one point of information about another character;
- one positive trait and one negative trait that you have;
- your favourite thing and your least favourite thing about the novel.
This section requires students to choose one novel that they have studied throughout the course and answer questions based on that chosen text. You must answer each part of the question on the same novel.
Certain texts have themes or characters that would be more suited to this question than others so make sure to read each part of the question before you select which text you will use. This is a good reason to study more than one novel throughout the course.
Students must have an in-depth understanding of the events of their chosen text and demonstrate this knowledge in their answers. To prepare for this question, students should develop their vocabulary to allow them to demonstrate their opinions and use it to refer back to the story they have chosen.
There is a prescribed list of novels that can be used in this section. It is critically important that you use one of these texts permitted for T2 schools. If you write about a novel that is not on the below list, your mark will be reduced by half.
Approved texts:
- Sárú
- LabhairAmach.com
- Tóraíocht Taisce

Student answer to part (a)
Is é fadhbanna teaghlaigh téama an úrscéil. Theme named
Student answer to part (b)
Feicimid an téama seo nuair atá Sharon ag troid lena hathair faoin dioscó. Níl sé ag iarraidh cead a thabhairt dí dul. Tá a hathair i gcaidreamh lasmuigh den phósadh, agus bagraíonn Sharon a rún a sceitheadh muna dtabharfadh sé cead di. Leis sin, tagann fearg air, agus buaileann sé a iníon. Feicimid cineálacha difriúla fadhbanna teaghlaigh; foréigean baile, dúmhál (blackmail) agus mídhílseacht (disloyalty).
It is clear that this student has identified and understood this question. They have also demonstrated an in-depth understanding of the text and linked that knowledge to the question asked.
Student answer to part (c)
Chuir an téama seo brón orm, toisc go gcruthaíonn fadhbanna teaghlaigh a lán míshonas do gach duine atá páirteach. Feictear é seo san úrscéal seo, mar níl aon duine sásta ag deireadh an úrscéil.
Student answer to part (d)
A Dhialann,
Éile anseo. Bhuel, tá a lán sceálta agam duit inniu. Ní chreidfidh tú céard a tharla! Named character and correct answer format
Is duine acadúil, sportúil mé, agus oibrím go dian dícheallach. Point 1 Ach ar an taobh eile den scéal, níl mé chomh fiontrach le mo dheirfiúr, Sharon. Le déanaí, faraor, bíonn sí ró-fhiontach. Tá a hiompar uafásach; chaith sí mála scoile cailín eile amach an fhuinneog, agus bíonn sí ag troid sa scoil agus sa bhaile. Níl a fhios agam cad is cóir dom a dhéanamh! Point 2
Is fuath liom an bealach a chaitheann Sharon liom. Bíonn sí ag magadh fúm, agus ag gáire fúm freisin. Níl se cothrom ar chor ar bith! Ar a laghad is duine foigneach mé agus bíonn an tréith sin uaim i gconaí. Point 3
Ach ar an lámh eile, táim sásta gur inis mo Dhaid an fhírinne do mo Mham. Bhí siad míshona le chéile, ach tá siad sásta anois toisc go bhfuil siad scartha óna chéile.
Bhuel, sin é! Tá súil agam go n-éireoidh iompar Sharon níos fearr mar gurbh é an rud is measa liom faoi latháir. Point 4
