Plant Reproduction and Seed Growth | Definitions
Cross Pollination
The transfer of pollen (male gamete) from the anther of one plant to the stigma of another plant.
Dispersal
Seeds being carried away from the parent plant.
Dormancy
A slowdown in metabolism where seeds undergo little to no growth and have reduced cell activity in order to survive the harsh winter conditions.
Fertilisation
The fusion of the male and female haploid gametes to produce a diploid zygote.
Germination
The regrowth of an embryo after a period of dormancy when the environmental conditions become suitable once more.
Pollination
The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma.
Self Pollination
The transfer of pollen (male gamete) from the anther to the stigma of the same plant.
Epigeal
A method of germination in plants when the cotyledon rises above the soil and becomes photosynthetic.
Hypogeal
A method of germination in plants when the cotyledon stays below the soil and shrivels and the plumule sprouts as leaves.
Vegetative Propagation
Asexual reproduction in plants where offspring come from one parent and are genetically identical to the parent.
