One evening, Paul and Áine turn on the television and a documentary called “Primetime” is on.

Is é an t-athrú aeráide le gairid ábhar an chláir.
The subject of the show is “climate change recently”.

Ceapann Áine gur fadhb chasta í agus aontaíonn Pól léi.
Áine thinks that it’s a complicated problem and Paul agrees.

Smaoiníonn siad siar ar na geimhrí a bhí acu le déanaí.
They think back on the recent winters.

I bpictiúr a dó, feicimid geimhreadh amháin le déanaí, agus é ocht gcéim faoin reophointe.
In picture two, we see one recent winter where it was below freezing point at -8 degrees.

Ba cheann de na geimhrí ab fhuaire riamh in Éirinn a bhí ann.

It was one of the coldest winters recorded in Ireland.

Bhí ar gach éinne fanacht sa bhaile agus bhí sé ag cur sneachta gan stad.
Everyone had to stay at home and it was snowing non-stop.

Bhí ar gach teaghlach níos mó airgid a chaitheamh ar bhillí teasa freisin.
Every household had to spend more money on heating bills as well.

De bharr na dteochtaí ísle, reoigh agus phléasc píopaí uisce, ag déanamh a lán damáiste do go leor tithe.
Because of the low temperatures, the water pipes froze and burst, causing a lot of damage to a lot of houses.

Chun na píopaí a dheisiú, bhí ar na teaghlaigh pluiméirí a fhostú. Ba chostas mór eile é mar chosnaigh an bille timpeall dhá chéad euro.
To fix the pipes, the households had to hire plumbers. It was another big cost as the bill cost around 200 euros.

Ar bharr na gcostas seo, mhéadaigh an phréimh árachais do gach teaghlach mí-ámharach ar chuir an drochaimsir isteach orthu.
On top of these costs, the insurance premium increased for every unfortunate household that was affected by the bad weather.

In picture 4, we see another repercussion of climate change and bad winter weather.

Geimhreadh amháin, bhí gaoth láidir ag séideadh agus mar thoradh, thit crann anuas ar ghluaisteán a bhí ag tiomáint thar bráid.
One winter, a strong wind was blowing and as a result, a tree fell on a car that was driving past.

Is léir go bhfuil an t-athrú aeráide fíordhainséarach. Bhí an t-ádh déarg le tiománaí an ghluaisteáin nár gortaíodh iad.
It’s clear that climate change is very dangerous. The driver of the car is lucky that they weren’t hurt.

In áiteanna cosúil le Corcaigh agus Baile Átha Cliath, bhí tuilte uafásacha.
In places like Cork and Dublin, there were bad floods.

I gCorcaigh, bhí ar roinnt daoine a dtithe a thréigean mar bhí siad scriosta ag an uisce. Bhí ar na seirbhísí éigeandála iad a bhailiú i mbáid tarrthála.
In Cork, some people had to evacuate their houses because they were destroyed by the water. The emergency services had to collect them in lifeboats.

I mBaile Átha Cliath, bhí an t-uisce chomh hard sin go raibh na gluaisteáin nach mór faoin uisce.
In Dublin, the water level was so high that the cars driving were almost underwater.

Sa phictiúr deireanach, feicimid cad is cúis le hathrú aeráide. Tá an tsraith ózóin á scriosadh de bharr truaillithe.
In the last picture, we see the reason for climate change. The ozone layer is being destroyed due to pollution.

Dá bharr sin, tá an domhan á théamh agus tá na cnapáin oighir sa Mhol Thuaidh ag leá. Má leáitear an iomarca cnapán, beidh tuilleadh uisce ar domhan. Mar sin, beidh tuilleadh tuilte, anuas ar dhrochaimsir, sa todhchaí.
Because of this, the world is heating up and the icecaps in the North Pole are melting. If too many caps melt, there will be more water on earth. Therefore more floods as well as bad weather.

Gan aon dabht, is ábhar imní é seo agus ba chóir dúinn machnamh a dhéanamh ar an bhfadhb agus ar réiteach na faidhbe.
Without a doubt, it’s a worrying subject and we should reflect on the problem and the solution.

Mar fhocal scoir, deir Pól go bhfuil ár dtimpeallacht i mbaol agus tá sé in am againn dul i ngleic leis an bhfadhb.
To conclude, Paul says that our environment is in danger and that it’s time for us to react to the problem.
