For both levels, 100% of your mark goes for a 3-hour exam. However, you are required to keep a record of your practical work over the two years of the course.
Everything you need to study Leaving Cert Physics
Physics is the most mathematical science subject with questions revolving around problem-solving and learnt formulas. Whether you love it or can’t wait to never glance at that textbook again, you can absolutely get something from it and use it to maximise your points. This guide will show you how Studyclix can make studying physics easier.

The exam
Here is a breakdown of each exam section:
This section is worth 30% of your grade. You need to answer 3 out of 4 questions (40 marks per question) based on experimental procedures and the use of results.
This section is worth 70% of your grade. You need to answer 5 out of 8 questions (56 marks per question). The questions are broader than in Section A and are more theory-based.

Future careers
Physics can be a helpful subject to have for a number of third-level options and in many cases, it counts as a science subject requirement for certain courses. It can be useful for careers in finance, statistics, engineering, physics and computer science.
How to study physics
Practice past exam questions
One of the most effective ways to study physics is to just practice, practice, practice. The more questions you can do, the better. We have broken each subject into topics to make it easier for you to do this.
Watch Physics solution videos
Stuck on a question and have no idea where to start? Our physics experts are on it. We have physics solution videos for many state and mock exam questions through the years and you can find them under every exam question. You can learn more about them here.
Read our H1 Guide
The physics course is a manageable size and has many upsides (such as the lack of essays). In this blog, Marina goes through her top tips and tricks on getting a H1 in this subject.
Watch Studyclix advice
Physics is one of those subjects you either love or hate. Regardless of how you feel about it, you can maximize the marks you can get in the exam. Check out this video where Gabrielle shows you how:
Listen to the Studyclix Podcast
In this episode of the Studyclix Podcast, Eimear interviews resident expert Celine on all things Leaving Cert Physics. Physics can be quite a daunting subject for many Leaving Cert students, even for those who are drawn to the strong maths aspect of it. Celine is here to talk you through the entire paper with some general study tips and some dos and don'ts for the exam so if you're looking to score that H1 in June, tune in here:
Topic analysis tables
If you are stuck for time to study physics, you should focus on studying the topics that come up most often. Checking out our topic analysis tables is the easiest way you can do this.
What is this you ask? Looking at the questions asked over the last 10 years, we created a table highlighting every year a topic within physics was asked. We have given each question a score to allow us to calculate the frequency for that topic and you can check out the key at the bottom of each table to understand the scores and question length.
We update our topic analysis tables every year, click here for our latest ones.
