What's involved?

Politics and society is a new Leaving Cert subject which was first examined in 2020. The subject aims to develop students' capacity to engage in reflective and active citizenship, informed by the insights and skills of social and political sciences. Leaving Certificate Politics and Society can be broken down into four strands:

  • Power and decision-making

  • Active citizenship

  • Human rights and responsibilities

  • Globalisation and localisation

Assessment

Assessment for Leaving Cert Politics and Society is made up of two parts. Here's a breakdown:

Report on a citizen project

This written report is worth 20% of your grade and will consist of three sections:

  • Section A: rationale and research.
  • Section B: execution of citizenship project.
  • Section C: reflections on the knowledge gained and skills developed during the project.
Written exam

This exam is worth 80% of your overall grade. It takes 2 hours and 30 minutes and consists of three sections:

  • Section A contains short questions.
  • Section B contains data-based questions.
  • Section C requires students to write essay-type answers.

This written report is worth 20% of your grade and will consist of three sections:

  • Section A: rationale and research.
  • Section B: execution of citizenship project.
  • Section C: reflections on the knowledge gained and skills developed during the project.

How to study politics and society

One of the most effective ways to study politics and society is to practice past exam paper questions. The more questions you can do, the fewer surprises you'll have on the day of your exam.
