We only discuss uniform acceleration in linear motion.
v = u + at where u = initial velocity and v = final velocity. Note that v, u and a are vectors (in 1 dimension), even though quantities without arrows usually denote magnitudes.
There are only two directions for these vectors, which are denoted by a + or - sign.
