  • Fieldwork Techniques 9 - Humidity
Fieldwork Techniques 9 - Humidity with Danielle Leggo @ Sydney Olympic Park. www.sydneyolympicpark.com.au/education_and_learning - Hi. I'm Danielle and I'm here to show you how to measure humidity. Humidity is the amount of moisture in the air. The piece of equipment you will need for that is called a hygrometer, or a wet and dry bulb thermometer -- the reason being is that we have a wet bulb and a dry bulb here. The first thing we have to do is make sure that the reservoir below our wetbulb has some water in it, and that the wick coming up and surrounding that wet bulb is wet itself. Now, we can conduct the test. We make sure that wehold it away from our body, our arm, or our hand so that we don't interact with the thermometer itself and change the results. We leave it out in the air for about two minutes and we start to take the readings. We take, first of all, the dry bulb reading. Today, the dry bulb reading is 23 degrees. We then take a reading from the wet bulb thermometer. The wet bulb thermometer today is 21 degrees. We now minus the wet bulb from the dry bulb. So, 23 minus 21 gives us a two degree difference. We have a difference column up here at the top of the hygrometer. We go to the two degrees. We work our way down until we come to the dry bulb thermometer reading. We go down the two degree difference column until we get to 23 degrees on our dry bulb, and we take the reading. That reading is 82; that means 82%. So, today our humidity in the air is 82%. That is how you measure humidity.
