Leaving Cert 2024 Adjustments - Everything you need to know

If you're sitting your Leaving Cert in 2024 things are going to be a little different. The State Examination Commission has announced changes for the exams next year.

In this blog, we will go through everything you can expect.

So what has changed? 

There will be adjustments for the 2024 exams because of the impact Covid-19 has had on students and their learning experience. 

Some changes most students will see are:

English - Higher level

Paper One: 

No adjustments

Paper Two: 

  • All 3 modes of the comparative will be included in next year's exam and students will only have to answer 1 mode
  • An extra poetry question will be included. You will have to answer 1 out of 5 questions
  • You must answer a Shakespeare question

 


English- Ordinary level

Paper One: 

No adjustments

Paper Two: 

  • There will be no compulsory questions for the single text. Q1 & Q2 will be joined together as one 3 part question
  • Q3 will be split into 3 individual questions worth 30 marks to offer more choice
  • The 3 modes will be offered for the Comparative
  • There will be 2 additional poems in the Prescribed poetry section

Irish - Higher Level

The Oral:

You can select 10 Sraith Pictiúr instead of 20. You can pick any 10 and they don't have to be the same as your classmates.

Paper One (Aural and Essay)

No adjustments 

Paper Two 

  • You have to complete both reading comprehensions
  • 2 poems will appear in the poetry section, you have to answer 1
  • 2 stories will appear in the Prose section, you have to answer 1
  • There is no change to the additional text question (Q4) 

Irish - Ordinary level

The Oral:

Maths - Higher level

 

Section A (Concept and Skills)

  • You have a choice of 6 questions. You have to do 5
  • Each question is worth 30 marks and the section will be worth 150 marks in total. 
  • Questions will be of similar length and cover the same type of content as previous years, you will just have to answer one less question. 

Section B (Contexts and Applications)

  • You will have a choice of 4 questions. You must do 3
  • Each question is worth 50 marks. This section in total is worth 150 marks

Maths - Ordinary level

The ordinary level adjustments are the same as the higher level ones.
